Frequently Asked Questions about Facelifts: What to Expect

Facelifts are a popular way to reverse wrinkles, lines, and other signs of aging on your face. Many patients are worried at the thought of a cosmetic surgeon removing the skin from their face to adjust the tissue underneath and replace the skin. Before undergoing a facelift, make sure you know what to expect.

What does a facelift do?

Facelifts lift and smooth the skin on the face and neck. Excess fat and skin are removed, leaving patients’ faces tighter. As one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures performed in the United States, it is usually recommended for patients in their 50’s and 60’s to reverse the visible signs of aging.

How is the procedure conducted?

During the facelift procedure, a cosmetic surgeon makes a careful incision in front of the ear. Then the skin is lifted, and underlying tissue is sculpted. Excess skin is removed, and the remaining skin is carefully replaced over the face.

What happens after the facelift?

Afterwards, the face will need to be bandaged for several days, with some swelling and bruising. It can take a few weeks for patients to return to their regular routine. Scarring is very minimal thanks to the careful positioning of the incision.

What results can be expected?

The goal with a facelift is to make a noticeable difference, but leave the face appearing natural. Full results are usually seen about three months after the surgery. The results from a facelift typically last five to ten years before the face will appear as aged as it did just prior to the surgery. Facelifts do not stop the aging process, but do “set back the clock”, making facial skin appear younger.

Are there different types of facelifts?

Yes. In addition to traditional facelift surgery, there are various procedures that result in facial rejuvenation, typically for a specific part of the face, including brow (forehead) lift surgery, midface lift, and eyelid surgery.

There are also less invasive versions of a facelift, including the Contour ThreadLift™ and facial liposculpture.
