Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure used to remove excess tissue from drooping or puffy upper and lower eyelids. It can make the patient’s face look younger and less tired, and, for some, improve vision.

Eyelid surgery is often performed along with a brow lift or facelift, to complete the transition to a more youthful appearance.

While most patients consider blepharoplasty in terms of their appearance, some choose the procedure to improve vision by lifting seriously drooping upper eyelids out of their field of vision. This problem can be a result of aging, or caused by weak muscles or damaged nerves in the upper lid, a condition known as ptosis.

Your first decision when considering blepharoplasty, as with any surgery, is whether you are a good candidate. Conditions such as dry eyes, high blood pressure, hypothyroidism, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or glaucoma may be exclusionary. Your Manhattan facial plastic surgery center will also consider your bone structure and underlying facial support tissue.

Assuming your health is generally good, the risk of complications of blepharoplasty is low and most are temporary. These may includetearing, itchy, burning eyes, dry eyes, light sensitivity and blurred or double vision, Your surgeon will discuss these side effects in detail and help you decide if surgery is appropriate for you.

To ensure the surgical outcome you expect and deserve, be sure to select a board-certified plastic surgeon. Board certification indicates your surgeon’s skills have been recognized by his or her peers.Ask your surgeon to show you results of previous eyelid surgeries he or she has performed and discuss how closely the procedure will fulfill your expectations.

Some of the best recommendations come from people you know and trust who have had blepharoplasty and are pleased with the results of their surgeries, so ask around. While some people still prefer to deny having had facial plastic surgery, it has increasingly become an acceptable topic of conversation and you may get some useful insight.
