Body Sculpting to Enhance and Maintain the Results of Plastic Surgery
Longer lasting results from facial and neck procedures are assured with proper posture. Gravity and poor upper body alignment contribute to aging of the face, neck and décolletage and significantly obscure the benefits of corrective surgery. Learning how to keep the neck and head in the proper position with a technique based on The Mensendieck Functional Movement Schemes (or Body Sculpture Workshop) helps prevent these forces from creating future wrinkles and sagging.
The head is balanced on the vertebrae in the neck. These seven vertebrae form the top of the spinal column, and the muscles in the back of the neck work to hold these vertebrae up. These muscles can be continually toned by their proper use to hold the neck erect and the head balanced properly on the neck. By training the small muscle groups in the neck and shoulders to support and align the head and neck, an improvement in the appearance of these structures can be maintained well after surgical intervention.
The human brain is probably among the most complex computer systems. It governs all of our movements. This computer instructs, via nerve channels, the activation of the many muscles, ligaments and bones needed to make a movement. As we develop and teach ourselves to move we very often develop bad habits. Our brain is then programmed. We don't realize that these bad postural habits determine the position and the shape and beauty of the entire neck and chin area (in addition to the rest of the body). Unfortunately, most of us do not learn proper body mechanics when we are young. Additionally, cosmetic changes of the neck and face are more likely to recur following surgery if we do not do something to change our bad habits.
Body Sculpture Workshop is the way to de-program our bodies, learn new ways to move and ensure an upright position with the muscle strengthening needed to maintain this posture. The muscles in the back of the neck are toned and strengthened, as well as the entire chest, upper shoulder girdle and back to produce a more youthful appearance and more relaxed and comfortable feeling in the entire body. The movement schemes are simple and, once learned, can be practiced throughout the day during ordinary physical activity. In addition to enhancing the appearance of the face and neck a sense of fitness is achieved that is unlike any other system. A new consciousness can be developed that acts to continually tone the upper and lower body during normal every day life.
Body Sculpture Workshop is based on a one hundred year old system that is still popular today in many European countries. Developed by Dr. Bess Mensendieck, this system was developed as a medical model of posture and body mechanics and was a requirement for medical school training in countries like Denmark, Switzerland as well as many others. The system was practiced by many of the most beautiful and elegant movie stars of the period such as Ingrid Bergman and Greta Garbo.
Lorie Kiviat has been teaching body mechanics based on the Mensendieck system as well as Yoga and various modalities of body work for over thirty years.
